History of Capitol View/Stifft Station

The Capitol View/Station Stifft's neighborhood is the result of Little Rock's westward expansion in the early twentieth century. Capitol View and Stifft's Station, located west of the Arkansas State Capitol, were the result of numerous additions to what was then western Little Rock. The neighborhood's architecture is predominantly Craftsman, Craftsman Bungalows, and Bungalows with modest Tudor or Colonial Revival detailing; Shotgun Houses, Queen Anne or American Foursquare styled homes, as well as various period revival influences including Spanish Colonial Revival Style architecture, can also be found. The neighborhood's dominance of these styles reflects its primary growth period of 1920 to 1929 when roughly 40% of the building stock was constructed.

This period, when combined with construction undertaken in the 1930s, accounts for the majority of housing stock built within the neighborhood. Despite the fact that Interstate 630 construction in the 1970s significantly altered the southern edges of the neighborhood, the neighborhood is largely intact and much of the original housing stock remains. Within the area, there are architecturally and historically significant structures and sites that should be preserved and protected. Two nearby structures are on the National Register of Historic Places: the T.R. Lamar Porter Field and McGuire House. As of 2004, 269 (54%) of the 501 properties in the district are contributing historic buildings, 181 (36%) are non-contributing historic buildings (altered or synthetically sided), and 51 (10%) are non-contributing buildings built after 1950.
