Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site

Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site is located in Little Rock, Arkansas, and is dedicated to preserving the history and legacy of one of the most important events in the American Civil Rights Movement. The site is centered around Little Rock Central High School, which played a pivotal role in the desegregation of public schools in the United States.

History of Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site

Little Rock Senior High School, built in 1927 for $1.5 million, was designed in the Gothic Revival style and was hailed as the most expensive, most beautiful, and largest high school in the country. Four statues over the front entrance represent ambition, personality, opportunity, and preparation.[9] Its dedication received national attention, with nearly 20,000 people in attendance. Little Rock Central High School was renamed in 1953.

In 1957, nine African American students attempted to enroll in Little Rock Central High School, which had previously been an all-white institution. Their efforts were met with strong resistance from both the Arkansas state government and the local community, leading to a confrontation that became known as the Little Rock Nine crisis.

The Little Rock Nine, as the students became known, were initially prevented from entering the school by the Arkansas National Guard. However, after a federal court order, President Dwight D. Eisenhower ordered the United States Army to escort the students into the school, allowing them to attend classes and marking a significant victory for the Civil Rights Movement.

Today, Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site preserves the history and legacy of the Little Rock Nine crisis and provides educational opportunities for visitors to learn about the struggle for civil rights in the United States. The site includes a visitor center, museum exhibits, and tours of the school and its surrounding areas. It is an important destination for anyone interested in American history, civil rights, and social justice. Learn about another popular place in Little Rock the Little Rock Zoo!
