Mabelvale

Mabelvale was a small, unincorporated train station town in southwestern Pulaski County, Arkansas, until it was annexed into Little Rock on May 3, 1973, following a special election. The area is now part of Little Rock's seventh ward, but it retains its own postal designation and ZIP code [72103] from the rest of the city. Brenda "B.J." Wyrick currently represents the neighborhood on Little Rock's City Board of Directors.

The neighborhood is generally defined as the homes and businesses located in the immediate vicinity of Mabelvale Main Street and the Union Pacific railroad line. However, due to its location on the southwestern outskirts of Little Rock proper, as well as its proximity to unincorporated communities, other neighborhoods in Southwest Little Rock, and adjoining towns such as Shannon Hills that share the ZIP code, Mabelvale's boundaries are frequently disputed. Nonetheless, most would agree that the area commonly referred to as Mabelvale today spans multiple counties: while primarily located in Pulaski County, some of its areas extend into neighboring Saline County.

History of Mabelvale

The community was originally settled in the early 19th century and was named after a local resident named Mabel Wilkins. In the early days, Mabelvale was primarily a farming community, with residents growing cotton, corn, and other crops. However, in the late 1800s, the discovery of coal in the area led to the development of a small mining industry.

During the 20th century, Mabelvale continued to grow and develop, with new businesses and residential areas being built. In the 1940s, a large ammunition plant was built in the area, providing jobs for many local residents during World War II. In the following decades, Mabelvale became a popular location for families seeking a quiet, suburban lifestyle while still being close to the amenities and attractions of Little Rock. Today, Mabelvale remains a small but vibrant community with a rich history. The area is known for its natural beauty, with many parks and outdoor recreational areas nearby, as well as its friendly and welcoming atmosphere. Despite its close proximity to Little Rock, Mabelvale has maintained its small-town feel, making it a popular destination for those seeking a slower pace of life.
