Pinnacle Mountain State Park

Pinnacle Mountain State Park is a 2,356-acre state park located just outside of Little Rock in Pulaski County, Arkansas. Pinnacle Mountain, an iconic landmark surrounded by the Big and Little Maumelle rivers' bottomlands, is the main attraction.

History of Pinnacle Mountain State Park

The area's first settlers referred to Pinnacle Mountain as "Mamelle," a breast-shaped hill in French. The Big and Little Maumelle rivers, as well as the nearby city of Maumelle, are all referred to as "Maumelle" after the river "Mamelle" eventually became that name. In the 1800s, visiting Pinnacle Mountain was a common pastime. After the local railroad was built in the 1890s and the automobile became widely used in the 1900s, climbing became even more popular.

In the modern park, quarrying for sandstone and shale began around 1920. The eastern slope of Pinnacle Mountain provided a significant amount of the material used to build the Lake Maumelle dam in the 1950s. Lake Maumelle, located immediately northwest of Pinnacle Mountain, is a high-quality raw water supply for a population of nearly 398,000; the reservoir opened in 1958, at least two years after the Big Maumelle River was dammed. The quarry pond is the result of extensive sandstone quarrying that took place at the modern visitor center in the 1960s.

The concept of a park had been discussed for many years, but it did not take off until the 1970s. Pinnacle Mountain State Park was established by the Arkansas General Assembly in 1973. Since then, 2,356 acres have been designated for a variety of purposes, including environmental education, outdoor recreation, and preservation.
