Quapaq Quarter

The Quapaw Quarter is a section of Little Rock, Arkansas, that includes the city's oldest and most historic business and residential neighborhoods. In order to honor the Quapaw Indians who lived there centuries ago, the area's name was first given in 1961.

History of Quapaq Quarter

The Quapaw Quarter is made up of up to fifteen separate National Historic Register Districts, with over 200 separate homes and buildings on the National Register of Historic Places. Trapnall Hall, located on East Capitol Avenue, was built in 1843 as the home of early state legislator Frederic Trapnall and his wife, Martha. Main Street and Broadway structures south of Interstate 630 are also included in this category.

Many small and large homes from the Antebellum and Victorian eras, as well as several examples of Craftsman-style architecture, can be found throughout the Quapaw Quarter. Many of these homes can still be found on Scott, Center, and Spring streets. On the CBS sitcom Designing Women, the exterior of one such home was known nationally as the exterior of the home containing the office of Sugarbaker Designs, the fictional Atlanta-based interior design firm. The actual house is located on Scott Street in Little Rock and was previously used as the office of the Quapaw Quarter Association, the primary organization that sponsors historic preservation efforts in the area.
