River Market

Little Rock's River Market District is located on the scenic south bank of the Arkansas River. The River Market District, once a desolate area with many empty and condemned buildings, now spans the length of President Clinton Avenue and encompasses a 10-block area of the city.

By day, the River Market District in downtown Little Rock offers a market hall with an exciting mix of food vendors that will entice your senses and satisfy any culinary cravings. This revitalized area also has a wide range of residential, commercial, entertainment, and cultural venues, including loft apartments, luxury condominiums, remodeled and newly developed office and retail space, restaurants, bars, and much more.

President Clinton Avenue was designated one of "10 Great Streets for 2009" by the American Planning Association's Great Places in America Program. This exemplifies Little Rock's strategic vision, planning and work of the past 20 years transforming the once desolate downtown area into a true destination enhancement.

History of River Market

The River Market District has thrived since development began in the early 1990s, with many new and exciting destination enhancements - the Arkansas Studies Institute, part of the Central Arkansas Library System and dedicated to Arkansas history and archives; the Witt Stephens Jr. The Central Arkansas Nature Center; residential developments such as 300 Third Tower and the River Market Tower; and the River Market Tower. The Clinton Presidential Library, which is within walking distance, has the energy that draws both tourists and locals to the area. Market Hall is a vibrant public food market that will entice your senses with its relaxing entertainment and diverse cultural offerings. It has an international and diverse selection of owner-operated shops and stalls selling everything from barbecues to sweet treats to tacos and pot stickers.

Little Rock's River Market debuted to great acclaim in 1996. The Market is the centerpiece of a $300 million riverfront development project that will take advantage of the Arkansas River's scenic beauty, Riverfront Park, and existing historical structures along the riverfront. The River Market District is located in the Quapaw Quarter, the city's oldest neighborhood. The Central Arkansas Library System has transformed a 1920s-era warehouse into Little Rock's main library, making it one of the River Market District's cornerstones.

Market Hall is a 10,000-square-foot indoor market open year-round. ft. and has a 40 ft. vaulted roof. There is also an outdoor farmers market with two covered pavilions totaling 15,000 sq. ft. It is a lovely, elegant structure that complements the surrounding structures. The Little Rock River Market reflects the continued national growth of farmers and public markets, selling seasonal foods and having a year-round indoor, fresh food market. Public markets provide opportunities for producers, consumers, and community planners to develop new strategies for improving food distribution in areas where consumers have limited access to fresh agricultural products.
